Big Brother and Ndisuio.sys - A new Internet phenomenon?

Ndisuio.sys, a very mysterious system file is present in Windows XP and Vista and is a driver for wireless things such as wi-fi and bluetooth. However, there have been many issues with this file downloading immense amounts of data and perhaps causing activity that is “big brother”ish.

The fact that hardly any information on this file downloading data is available by Microsoft makes things quite suspicious about it. It has even been noted that it looked as if it was transferring data to major companies like Comcast, Road Runner, Time Warner, BTC and Verizon.

The good news is, it turns out this file duplicates data that is sent/received, so wherever you go, it will also transfer the data to that file but it does not leave the computer/network so it’s not spyware. So it’s not as much of a big brother situation then it looks like. It simply performs internal communication tasks and stands for NDIS user I/O, hence, NDISUIO. NDISUIO is also used as a driver by many developers as it makes certain wireless network tasks easier such as implementing it for 802.11x connections. Some firewalls also use it as it can get the data in order to filter it.

But duplicating this data can hog resources for no reason, so disabling it is the best thing to do. The data rate of this file’s received data is huge, so that indicates that the data transfer is not over the Internet, but locally. So it’s just a duplicate of network activity but because it’s local everything transfers faster but uses more resources then casual internet usage as there’s more data involved at a given time span of 1 second, for example.

To disable this file, go to the control panel, administration tools, services, Wireless Zero Configuration, double click and disable it. This file is probably required to run if you use any linksys wireless devices.

creation, as it is, I find rather amazing. Granted there is the ones in it for the money with the google ads for days and the get rich schemes aflow. Then there are the occasional (at least for me) porn blogs, which I really find distasteful. And the ones that have up and been left to dye a miserable death.

Then there are those amazing finds where you get to see inside someone else's world. Where lives are exposed and you get to find out what makes someone tick. Feel their pain and find their strengths and weakness. Feel their joy and their sadness.

The Internet can be such a wild and woolly place where all hell can break loose if your not careful, if you don't stay on your toes, ever diligent.

Then there is the sweet and sorrowful side. Almost like Japanese sweet and sour sauce all rolled up in one.

Having a father that died of cancer, I can sort of relate to what this lady must be going through. This is what I encountered this morning. Seems legit and seems very serious:

Lisa has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time in what seems like as many years. She wants to take her daughters to Disney World, something she can not afford.

Lisa is one of the bloggers I started reading almost immediately upon entrance into the blogging world. Her blog at the time, Rock Bitch, was like nothing I had seen before. She was snarky, honest and oh so funny. I’ve kept up reading her each time her domain has changed, whether cause she blew it up or whether she just wanted a change.

Lisa, you are strong and beautiful and I have faith you will pull through this. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and know that I am here if you ever need me."

This is the second time this store has come up on this blog. One more and I'm gonna start naming names and e-mailing people.

Yesterday, April fools day. my wife is going through the checkout. Everything is fine and my wife is swiping her debit card through the scanner, when the Cashier decides to open her mouth.

"Do you know you have a spider on the side of your Neck?"

My wife has now stopped what she is doing and is swiping at one side, then the other side of her neck, wondering if she has removed the little varmint from her neck.

"April Fools"

I would really hope my wife gave the cashier a look that would kill, but knowing her, she probably just walked away with so much as a sign of her distaste for this strange customer service experience.

This wasn't the same cashier as before.

Now on a side note, I have worked with individuals that have had a fear of insects, especially one woman who had arachnophobia something terrible. I'm sure the store would have loved it if my wife had suffered from this terrible fear and had sufered a heart attack on the spot.
